Entry and Visa

Southern Laos and Pakse are best reached by plane from Bangkok or by land, via the Chong Megk border crossing, coming from Ubon Ratchathani. Three times a week, Lao Airlines flies from the international airport in Bangkok to Pakse and back. One also gets to Ubon Ratchathani from Bangkok by plane. The time of flight to Ubon is approx. 1 hour. Driving from Ubon to the border crossing is an additional 1.5 hours approximately. At the airport in Ubon, a wide range of suppliers offer that destination.

Bear in mind that the border crossing at Chong Megk closes at 8.00 pm. Whichever option you choose, it will be unproblematic to get your visa when crossing the border. EU- nationals will be requested to pay a visa fee of 30 USD on weekdays and 31 USD on Sundays and public holidays. It is best to have the fee at hand in USD, as the exchange rate in other currencies might not correspond to the official conversion rate. Depending on our arrangement, we will pick you up either at the airport in Pakse, at the Chong Megk border crossing or at Ubon Ratchathani airport. Should you choose to travel to Thailand from Laos by land,

Currency

The official currency is the KIP. The Thai Bath and USD are just as easily accepted. While it is no problem to withdraw cash from the extensive network of cash dispensers in the provincial capitals, it is recommended to carry sufficient currency on you on longer inland excursions.
